MR. GAGAby Dalit Nemirovsky | 19.11.13
A new campaign to raise funds on Kickstarter, with the participation of Oscar-winning actress Natalie Portman, was launched this week for the Heymann Brothers’ documentary feature about Ohad Naharin and the Batsheva Dance Company.
The film, which follows Naharin for seven years, and documents his unique style with the dancers in rehearsal rooms and performances in Israel, Sweden, Japan, the US, Greece, Finland and the Netherlands – is scheduled to be released next year as part of the 50th anniversary of the Batsheva Dance Company.
“Mr. Gaga” tells the extraordinary story of Ohad Naharin for over forty years – from his childhood in the kibbutz, through his time as a singer in a military troupe during the Yom Kippur War, his impressive career as a young dancer with the Martha Graham Company in New York, and the revolution in the Israeli dance world when he was appointed artistic director of Batsheva over twenty years ago.
In order to complete the film, Heymann Brothers is requesting various audience throughout the world to purchase the film in advance and to receive a variety of gifts (such as free-of-charge Gaga classes, invitations to enter the studio and watch Naharin at work, rare vintage posters of Naharin as a young dancer, DVDs of previous Heymann Brothers films, a personal photography session with Batsheva house photographer Gadi Dagon, a Gaga class with Ohad Naharin, and more).
The film is supported by the New Fund for Cinema and Television and Channel 8 (HOT, Israel), the Jewish Theater in Stockholm and AVRO.
