And We Were Tortured | Artistic representations of torture victim testimonies in Israel is an art exhibition created by The Public Committee against Torture in Israel (PCATI). Participating artists received a written testimony of a torture victim which PCATI represented over the years, and subsequently created a work of art that gives expression to that testimony. The work will be displayed next to the victim’s testimony itself.
The Public Committee against Torture in Israel (PCATI) is a veteran human rights organization and leader in social change in Israel. PCATI’s work anchored in legal advocacy, public outreach, international advocacy, and human rights education seeks to instill a greater public sense of the imperative of the absolute prohibition against torture. One of the ways to reach the public awareness is through art using a multi media approach to public education. The art is complemented by additional events in the course of the exhibit including film screenings, lectures and discussions.
And we were tortured gathers 23 artists among the most influential artists working in Israel and abroad such as David Tartakover, Michal Naaman, David Reeb, Alex Levac, Sigal Primor, Miki Kratsman, Larry Abramson, Roee Rosen and more.
